Color- Element of Art

Color is everywhere.  We see it in the blue of the sky, the yellow, reds and oranges of the changing autumn leaves, the green of the grass, and the black of the night.

The Color Wheel is an effective way of organizing colors

Color is what we see because of reflected light. Light contains different wavelengths of energy that our eyes and brain "see" as different colors. When light hits an object, we see the colored light that reflects off the object.

Red, blue, and yellow are the primary colors. With paints of just these three colors, artists can mix them to create all the other colors. When artists mix pigments of the primary colors, they make secondary colors.

Red + Blue = Purple
Red + Yellow = Orange
Blue + Yellow = Green

.

Primary colors are pure colors and  cannot be made by mixing from any other color.  Red. Blue. Yellow.

Secondary colors are created by mixing two of the primary colors together. Orange. Green. Purple.

Mix each primary color with its neighboring secondary, and the result is a Tertiary color; yellow-green. yellow-orange.

Black is the combination of all colors.  White is the absence of color.
