Lines are everywhere. You can see lines in the grain of a piece of wood or in the cracks on a sidewalk.
In art, Line is an element of art that is the path of a moving point through space.
Lines are used to:
-
Create boundaries between shapes
-
Create boundaries between colors, textures or values
-
Lead the eye from one space to another
-
Create textures
-
Suggest emotional qualities

Grid drawing is a very old technique of transferring images (from sketches to a full size canvas or fresco, etc...)
Always make sure that the number of squares on the original picture and your working area are exactly the same (even if the size of the squares are bigger on the paper). This is because no matter how many times bigger (or smaller) you make the drawing, the proportions and dimensions can only stay the same if the number of boxes (squares) matches exactly.
Make sure you follow all steps below.
2.3.2 The Van Eycks and Rogier van der Weyden
About the project: You will get full credit if you complete all the steps and are neat with your design. Partial credit for incomplete work.
Directions: 1. Start by making a new "dog" template that has a different profile from the example dog. 2. Watch the videos and look at the handout for additional steps for making the template. 3. Next draw a 3 inch grid on large paper and outline the dog in the first square. Then “flip” over the dog and line it up so that the head is facing down and reversed. On the second row you can "reflect" the image by turning the template upside down. Fit the template in so that they match without gaps or overlaps 4. Create a line drawing of the dog and add details to each tessellation. Look at your "theme" (main topic) worksheet and add details that relate to that idea 5. Be creative in your design and add contrast, shading and colors as you feel fit the design and make it stand out.
You can watch the videos for help with this project.
