In art, Line is an element of art that is the path of a moving point through space.
Lines are used to:

Grid drawing is a very old technique of transferring images (from sketches to a full size canvas or fresco, etc...)
Always make sure that the number of squares on the original picture and your working area are exactly the same (even if the size of the squares are bigger on the paper). This is because no matter how many times bigger (or smaller) you make the drawing, the proportions and dimensions can only stay the same if the number of boxes (squares) matches exactly.

Prehistoric to Late Middle Ages
The Lascaux cave paintings in France are believed to be about a few thousand years old.
In the past, artists didn't dress in black, throw wine-and-cheese parties for their admirers, or have gala openings to publicize their work.
Most paintings prior to the Renaissance were created for a reason, such as to explain hunting techniques or spread religious messages.
You'll now study pre-Renaissance art and the various meanings that art encompassed, depending on historical context.
It's Still Art
Even though ancient works were likely not "art for art's sake," they are art nonetheless.
For example, the Lascaux cave paintings are not stick figures. Lines are clear and show a variety in color value. The animals are vibrant. By using natural curves in the caves, some of the images even have perspective.
Ancient painting is a reminder that since the beginning of human existence, people everywhere have felt (and continue to feel) an urge to depict the world around them.
