Lines are everywhere. You can see lines in the grain of a piece of wood or in the cracks on a sidewalk.
In art, Line is an element of art that is the path of a moving point through space.
Lines are used to:
-
Create boundaries between shapes
-
Create boundaries between colors, textures or values
-
Lead the eye from one space to another
-
Create textures
-
Suggest emotional qualities

Classwork & assignments
Grid drawing is a very old technique of transferring images (from sketches to a full size canvas or fresco, etc...)
Always make sure that the number of squares on the original picture and your working area are exactly the same (even if the size of the squares are bigger on the paper). This is because no matter how many times bigger (or smaller) you make the drawing, the proportions and dimensions can only stay the same if the number of boxes (squares) matches exactly.
Make sure you follow all steps below.
2.3.2 The Van Eycks and Rogier van der Weyden
Rubric/Instructions - Surrealism Project
You are going to create a painting inspired by surrealism. You can use any medium you want. Start thinking about your theme or thesis for the year and incorporate some of your ideas, images, and thoughts into this first project. “Surrealism was a twentieth century art movement. The images found in surrealist works are as confusing and startling as those of dreams.
You have 4 options for this project. Before you will be cleared to start, you must show me your sketch of at least 2 different ideas.

Click to download/view the project rubric/instructions.
Option #2 Create a painting inspired by Salvador Dali. His forms distort and change. Bring in some objects and distort them to create a Dali inspired painting. You can also paint some distorted objects from photo or imagination.
Option #3 Create a painting inspired by Magritte.
He often uses “Scale, Levitation, Juxtaposition, Dislocation, Transparency, Transformation.”
Option #4 Pick another surrealist artist that is inspired by their art.
To make something surreal you can...
A: Change the normal scale of an object (Ex. a car the size of a living room)
B: Turn the accepted order of things upside down (EX dogs walking people instead of people walking dogs
C: Mix internal and external space (Ex. trees growing in a kitchen, seeing the inside and outside of an object at the same time)
D. Transform one object into another (Ex. a car turning into a fish, and animal turning into a person, etc.)
Grading - To get full credit your project should be:
1. Created neatly and without wrinkles, smudges, rips in paper, etc. The paint is blending smoothly and the colors are chosen wisely.
2. You have painted in the style of surrealism and the images have a dream-like feel and quality. You have also chosen an option #1-4.
Originality. You have not copied exclusively (although you may copy certain parts from pictures, images, etc). You have come up with an original painting and di not use logos from brands or use any copyrighted material (no clothing brands, sports teams, cartoons, music labels or anything else that has a copyright). Be original! “Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (title 17, U. S. Code ) to the authors of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works.”
You used your studio time well and were on task.

Option #1
Yves Tanguy. If you pick this option create your own surreal image in his
style. His formula is simple. A horizon-less environment with harshly lit form
and a long shadow cast over the background. From the bottom up th
ebackground looks like the ground and from the top down it looks like sky.
Your background must not have a distinct line across the page. Limit your
colors to be similar. Your form can be abstract like he does or it can be your
own idea of what is surreal.
