Lines are everywhere. You can see lines in the grain of a piece of wood or in the cracks on a sidewalk.
In art, Line is an element of art that is the path of a moving point through space.
Lines are used to:
-
Create boundaries between shapes
-
Create boundaries between colors, textures or values
-
Lead the eye from one space to another
-
Create textures
-
Suggest emotional qualities

Grid drawing is a very old technique of transferring images (from sketches to a full size canvas or fresco, etc...)
Always make sure that the number of squares on the original picture and your working area are exactly the same (even if the size of the squares are bigger on the paper). This is because no matter how many times bigger (or smaller) you make the drawing, the proportions and dimensions can only stay the same if the number of boxes (squares) matches exactly.
Make sure you follow all steps below.

Steps:
1) Pick one of the following color schemes - Triadic, analogous, secondary, complementary or split complementary. In color theory, a color scheme is the choice of colors used in design for a range of media. Color schemes are used to create style and appeal. Select a color scheme for your painting based on the type of image you want to draw and your theme. Click here for a review on color theory.

2) Next create a line drawing of the image. It should define the form and show details without any shading.
3) Measure an even amount all the way around and lightly mark it with a pencil.

4) You must connect each point with a point across the canvas, but it cannot be the one directly across from it because it would form a regular grid. We don't want a standard grid but rather a random one. The lines will all cross and create a fragmented appearance.
5) Next you will paint each shape or section in with a gradient of your color scheme (Triadic, analogous, secondary, complementary or split complementary). Gradation is a slow and steady change from light to dark. Blend smoothly with each gradient.

Example of a gradient using the secondary colors yellow and purple.
